Letter of Support from Baghdad

I received an email from a Gastronomica subscriber couple of weeks after the publication of the letter of objection regarding the publication of "Wok the Dog" series.

The letter reads as follows:

To the Editor:

I am currently deployed in Baghdad and just received my latest issue of Gastronomica. I read the complaint from a new reader who was offended by Charlie Grosso's photography of meat markets (Summer 2008). I know everybody has an opinion and is entitled to it. That being said, I want to let you know that I LOVED the photographs and the story. They were beautiful and on point as to what the locals eat. I am disappointed in the reader's comments and agree with Charlie Grosso's rebuttal that this person's views global food with blinders on (my words, not hers). This reader is simply ignorant as to what people in other countries choose to eat and in some cases have to eat. I appreciate how Grosso pointed out that the local, sustainable ways we are only now leaning about in America are the ways in which billions of people on this planet already eat. Most people outside of the States (who, generally speaking, live in poverty) don't know the cute, quaint farmer's market found in beautiful northern California and elsewhere in our country. Thank you for your fantastic work, I can't wait to see more.
