The Meaning of Life According to Shepard Fairey

January 30, 2009
Los Angeles, CA

Yes, there has been a lot of posting about Shepard Fairey here of late...but there are just so much to say about it...but here he speaks for himself!

A Shepard Fairey Primer From USA Network

Among the accolades Shepard Fairey has been receiving recently is "Character Approved" a new award from USA Network that honors leading innovators who are shaping American Culture.

Now when I tell you that I want to change the world with my art. Do you still doubt me?

Facebook Divorce

January 24, 2009
Los Angeles, CA

We have endeavored to embrace the different channels of self-expression, marketing, networking, art making and what not the 21st century is offering us. Many of the inventions has been quiet wonderful; I am crippled without an internet connection these days. I can hardly think back on the pre-internet era or a pre-blackberry day.

Yet, recently I found myself in a situation that I find to be slightly absurd, that none of us would have even thought of being possible or actually mattered 3-4 years ago. Yet in this moment in time, I find myself to give this question some serious thought.

When do you change your relationship status on Facebook? When you are no longer in a relationship, when is it ok to change your status to single? Once you do change your status, all of your friends and mutual friend of you and your ex will pepper your wall with sympathy, questions and comments...in a click of a button, everyone who you are connected to will know what is happening.

Is the ending of a relationship not 100% real until you officially change your status on Facebook? Has our status become the final lynch-pin, the metaphorical ink that dries on our divorce document? Or are we simply offering up too much information for anyone and everyone who is curious enough to know?

This is when I came across this article, "British man killed wife over 'single' Facebook status". Ok... so maybe we all need to think twice before we make our next posting on Facebook...

Do you think Samuel Beckett is laughing in his grave?

Obamaissance

By Mr. Brainwash

Jan 22, 2009
Los Angeles, CA

Finally, we have entered a new era...(phew...I was afraid that this day would never come. As I was watching the inauguration, I had the freighting thought of "what if this was inauguration for McCann / Palin instead? thank god its not!) Now with our new President comfortably seated in the White House, I started to think about the iconic image of Obama by Shepard Fairy that was an essential part of the campaign. I don't recall any other election where art, especially street art, was such an integral part to the mythology of the man. The art branded Obama's face into our minds, and made us believe that he is hope, and with that, there can be hope. I hope this will be a renaissance for art, culture, faith, responsibility and basic human decency. I don't ever want to hear another argument about how art is not essential, that is not as powerful as policy. Art helped changed the world. The proof is in the White House.

Instantaneous yet Magical

Jan 7, 2009
Los Angeles, CA

There is a lot of news, blog entries and what not to catch up on when you have been in a news black out for a month, even if you are only reading the non-hard news.

There is a piece about the end of Polaroid Film in the New York Times. It was a beautiful elegy for 60 years of Polaroid magic. There is something special about not knowing, about waiting to see that image, even its only minutes more that you have wait. It is as if during those minutes, all things are suspended and there is a chance, a fractional chance that some how the images improves itself and becomes a little bit more wonderful.

The beauty of Polaroid film is in its imperfection. The uncontrolled factors of discoloration, strange rendering of colors, emulsion smudges and etc. Digital camera has replaced the instantaneous results Polaroid once offered. But our infinite abilities to control all aspects of the our imperfections takes away the magic.

I was able to find my favorite Polaroid film, T-55, for sale at a premium price of $129 USD per box of 20 Sheets. I must admit the urge to order a couple of boxes and stash it for later, until there is perfect project for it is rather strong. After all, magic like this may never be available again. To hold onto this last piece of history or not?
